Our time in Roatan with American Hero Adventures is a memory my wife and I regularly reminisce about even though it was nearly three years ago. An experience where we were able to enjoy life with one another – which is at the heart of American Hero Adventures philosophy and stated mission. From scuba diving to holding sloths, helping Troy enhance his lionfish hunting skills, and being marveled by the generosity that is American Hero Adventures, Roatan was an experience like no other for Irene and I. Roatan helped us unwind. But we also made lifelong (and Facebook) friends. We met many people we now considered friends that we recollect great memories be it diving, great food, or communal meals by the pool, American Hero Adventures made it happen!
Although the other veterans and I never served together, there’s a unique emotional connection shared between those that serve in small, close-knit units such as those who served in a special operations unit. Making positive memories is what AHA is all about! It’s not about diving, it’s not about hunting, big game trophies, it’s not about getting stamps in a passport. This was my first couples trip with AHA, and I honestly went into it a little skeptical. I didn’t know anyone in the group and wasn’t sure what to expect. Looking back now, it was an incredible experience and a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and build meaningful relationships.
One of the things AHA does exceptionally well is bringing veterans and their spouses together with others who share similar backgrounds and life experiences. Veterans have a unique bond, even when they served in different branches, held different jobs, or served during different periods. There is an understanding that exists without needing much explanation.
It was equally rewarding to watch the spouses connect. Some were with their veterans throughout their military service, while others came into the relationship after their spouse had already transitioned out. Regardless of when they entered the journey, they all shared common experiences and challenges. Being the spouse of a veteran comes with unique circumstances that can be difficult to navigate. Having the opportunity to learn from one another, encourage each other, and speak into each other’s lives and relationships is invaluable. Veterans can be a lot to deal with at times, and having a community that understands those realities is a tremendous blessing.
AHA put together an amazing group representing different branches of service and military occupations. Listening to everyone’s stories, learning about their experiences, and sharing our own was healing in ways I didn’t expect. We laughed together, talked a little trash, supported one another, and built connections that felt genuine. For many veterans, what we miss most after leaving the military is the brotherhood—the feeling that someone always has your back. This trip helped recreate a piece of that.
As divers, we understand the importance of having a dive buddy. Underwater, you maintain situational awareness and look out for one another. Equally impactful was the camaraderie built with other veteran couples. The bonds formed naturally through shared adventure and genuine connection, creating a sense of community without pressure of organized sessions to share or revisit difficult experiences.
American Hero Adventures provided us with far more than an incredible trip — it gave us the opportunity to strengthen the foundation of our marriage, connect with an amazing collection of people, and create memories we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the trip of a life time. The 10 days I spent in New Zealand with AHA and my fellow veterans has been an experience that has changed me for the foreseeable future. When I received the call from Captain Givens at American Hero Adventures (AHA) letting me know I was selected for this year’s Javelina hunt I was truly grateful to be associated with such a GREAT organization. This was not my first Javelina hunt, but it was by far the best! The weather didn’t cooperate on opening day but all three of us tagged out the next morning. I would like to thank Big Chino Outfitters for the excellent accommodations, great food and for providing guides to help us on the hunt, Glock and Leopold for donating the pistols and optics that allowed us to accurately take down the Javelinas and Eric at Ruff’s Sporting Goods in Flagstaff for donating the ammo and FFL transfer fees that allowed us to keep the pistols. AHA is a Class Act when it comes to supporting and taking care of Veterans and understanding what they have been through no matter how long they were in the military or what disabilities they may have. From start to finish this was an Adventure of a Lifetime and one that I will never forget!

Being that deep in the woods and able to experience the bounty of nature Oregon has to offer in that setting was priceless and something l will never forget. When we were going through some of the canyons you could feel the history on the rocks and in the water. Men as tough as their axe handles dredging through the woods and exploring new territories. What it must have been like in the 1800’s in this special place. During the trip, I saw and abundance of wildlife from black bears and deer to rattlesnakes and bald eagles. Our river guides were professional, genuine and had great stories about the land and history of the Rogue Valley. The campsites were amazing and getting to sleep near the river in the valley of the canyon was awesome. Each night the sky was lit up with the stars. You could see the whole Milky Way as you relaxed and listened to the sound of the Rouge River in the background. From beginning to end, everyone involved with this trip did an amazing job. I sincerely thank American Hero Adventures and their sponsors that made this rafting trip happen. Keep up the great work and thank you for providing this Soldier with the wonderful opportunity to take part in this very special trip. These memories will be with me forever and I am grateful. This trip was also my first time rafting and kayaking, both of which I plan to again very soon. Our guides from Morrison’s were very friendly and knowledgeable about the river and the surrounding area. During breaks from the river, our guides would take us on exploration trips up a creek or along the river trail. I really enjoyed these opportunities to take in surrounding area.
To me the most stressful part of any trip is getting all the logistics figured out beforehand and ensuring things go smoothly during the trip. Having planned events for large groups myself, I understand and really appreciate the effort that AHA put into the coordinating this trip. AHA took away all the stress of going on a multi-day trip by having everything squared away during the entire trip, from beginning to end.

To say they were accommodating would be an understatement to how we were treated both as prior military and human beings. Troy and his crew never lost sight of their military mindset. That’s evident when they’re present and you see how they get things done. Is easy to fall in formation so to say when you have a leader like Troy using his knowledge and resources to give you the best experience imaginable. I had participated with another organization, but didn’t have the quality experience I was hoping for, so I was skeptical to try another one. Once I decided to go, I convinced my buddy Jordan from Wyoming to go with me. He and I served together for seven and a half years in the Marine Corps. After we contacted Troy we received instructions that were clear cut and simple. After meeting Troy and his crew, I realized these guys really knew what they were doing both as an organization and a family. That’s exactly what they are and how they treated us, like family. A group of people just like us in the essence that yea, we’ve been hurt and bent every which way possible, but never did we break. People who know the pain you’ve been through, overcame and adapted just like you had to. It’s hard being as young as I am and already 60 percent disabled. My mind must be at 160 percent every time I attempt anything to compensate for my body. When we got off that plane it was like under the care of that big brother who you know no matter what is going to take care of you and help you. I considered this trip therapeutic, inspiring and motivating. These guys were in shape both mentally and physically. The trip itself was perfect to get you hooked, no pun intended. I made some funny memories and moments that will last a lifetime. It’s not always about what comes out of the water that makes it a good fishing trip. It’s the time and effort you spend getting there and setting up with good people who have your back that makes a fishing trip legendary. Anything after that is just a bonus. We got the best of all worlds from the crew at AHA and Devil Dog Dynasty. And thanks to our guide, Avery, I caught my first shark, stingray, and several species of ocean fish. I’ll be damned if I don’t go back after the monster I battled by the rocks and lost seconds before getting him on the boat. To you unknown fish, I say “Well played. You won this time, but next time I will be more prepared”.

This is undoubtedly the greatest veteran-centric non-profit organization today. On my first-ever hunt, American Hero Adventures gave me the most memorable experience I’ve had as a veteran. Upon my arrival to the ranch in northern Arizona, I was greeted with a warm welcome and a delicious steak and potato dinner from the outstanding folks at Big Chino Outfitters. Glock, Leupold, Bladetech, and Doubletap ammo supplied more gear than anyone could possibly wish for. The guides and services from Desert Edge Outdoors, Bond Trophy Outfitters, and Big Chino Outfitters were absolutely astonishing. Everything about this was truly unforgettable. There is no better example of honest and selfless leadership than what you will find in this organization.

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much my wife Debbie and I enjoyed being part of the American Hero Adventures couples retreat in La Paz, Mexico.
The organization of the trip was fantastic from the time we boarded the plane until we said our goodbyes before going home. We never felt like we needed to worry about anything, and the scheduling was perfect for us. Having a break between the two days of fishing gave us a chance to rest up for our second day at sea.
Deb and I agree that the day spent swimming with the sea lions was awesome! Being able to have that interaction was a “once in a lifetime” experience. The company you used to guide our excursions is truly a first rate operation. We felt pampered from the beginning when they took time to fit each of us with appropriate snorkel/wetsuit equipment, and from then on as they treated us like their most favored guests. The camp in the cove where their chef cooked our lunch was beautiful, and the food was fresh and of restaurant quality.
The staff and facilities of the Hotel Marina couldn’t have been better. We never met any staff member who was having a bad day. They all went out of their way to make sure our stay was the best it could be. The meals they provided for us exceeded our expectations, and the other restaurants in town we were able to dine at were also fantastic. We enjoyed being able to eat at the different venues to experience the wide variety of dishes the city had to offer.
We are very thankful to have been able to be a part of the La Paz trip. Meeting fellow guests made this trip even more enjoyable. The friendships we made with them is something we will cherish.

In May, 2015 my wife, Rose, and I took a trip to New Zealand with American Hero Adventures. It was far above and beyond what Rose and I ever expected. I was deployed and injured in ’06 and sent home in ’07. That’s when the difficulties started; PTSD, a fused spine, migraines, hearing loss and the loss of my career really hit our home. The effects of this on my family and me have been tremendous and mostly bad. Thankfully my wife is truly an amazing woman, tolerant and patient. She has been a major source of support and I would not have made it this far without her. While I was out hunting, my wife was taken on a sight-seeing/shopping trip by one of their resident guides and was able to take some incredible photographs of the flora and fauna there. Later in the trip, she even came out on the ram hunt with me (another first) and enjoyed it! Now she wants to come hunting with me stateside; it’s nothing short of a miracle. Again, to American Hero Adventures, we would love to THANK YOU for this amazing adventure. Seeing a true non-profit organization dedicated to serving those who serve is rare and refreshing. It was a great time and one we will never forget.

I’m not just thanking you for teaching me the art of fly-fishing but also for the opportunity to be near other veterans whom I could relate to. Even though I experienced horrific situations, I missed my Corp. I missed my family. That’s what it becomes in the service. It’s a family you love to hate and will defend to your last breath.
I was scared to go on the fly fishing trip because of trauma in my past but with my husbands encouragement I dove head in. I knew in my heart I needed to be with my brothers again. I had never met a single one of these brothers before but I had hope. It proved to be a great decision to go.
Over the course of the trip I listened to my brothers as they opened up and talked of their pain and how far they had come. We were all at different places in our journey of becoming who we needed to be. I could feel myself relax and the anxiety leave me as my brothers accepted me and helped me feel safe. I was home again. We laughed, we let go and we healed.
Thank you so much for the opportunity. Living can be a struggle but when you have others to help you along, the path becomes less worrisome and much more manageable.

In 2012, my husband and I were invited to Paisley, Oregon to participate in an amazing group camping trip. This trip was put on by a veteran’s organization called American Hero Adventures. I believe it was the first event ever for this organization, but you would never know it because of how organized it was and how amazing the people were.
My husband is an above the elbow left arm amputee veteran. He lost his arm in Iraq in 2004. He and I had such a wonderful time during this event. There was fly-fishing, tomahawk throwing, archery, shooting, and a wonderful pig roast! During all the activities, there were people there to help him and accommodate him with his disability. They were all so happy to help! His favorite activity was the fly-fishing. He loves fishing and any time he gets a chance to go, he does! I especially loved the archery, which I had never done before. Apparently I’m a natural at it.
We sincerely had a wonderful time during this trip, and it meant a lot to us to be invited. I really see a difference in my husband when he is in the great outdoors. There’s something about being in nature that makes him feel at peace, and American Hero Adventures hit the nail right on the head! And to include spouses and family members was a definite bonus! It was a great bonding experience, not just for my husband and I, but for all the veterans that were there as well. To see everyone with a smile on their face was very heart warming. Kudos to American Hero Adventures and founder Troy Givens for doing something so incredible for veterans and their families!
