Stories From Our Heroes

Real adventures, real reunions, real healing — told by the service members, veterans, and spouses who lived them.

Our time in Roatan with American Hero Adventures is a memory my wife and I regularly reminisce about even though it was nearly three years ago. An experience where we were able to enjoy life with one another – which is at the heart of American Hero Adventures philosophy and stated mission. From scuba diving to holding sloths, helping Troy enhance his lionfish hunting skills, and being marveled by the generosity that is American Hero Adventures, Roatan was an experience like no other for Irene and I. Roatan helped us unwind. But we also made lifelong (and Facebook) friends. We met many people we now considered friends that we recollect great memories be it diving, great food, or communal meals by the pool, American Hero Adventures made it happen!

Although the other veterans and I never served together, there’s a unique emotional connection shared between those that serve in small, close-knit units such as those who served in a special operations unit. Making positive memories is what AHA is all about! It’s not about diving, it’s not about hunting, big game trophies, it’s not about getting stamps in a passport. It’s about creating new friendships; it’s about forming bonds and strengthening connections with each other.

Several people we’ve met through American Hero Adventures checked on us during devastating Florida hurricanes in 2024. That sentiment goes far beyond being friends from “just a weeks’ vacation” – AHA helps form and grow meaningful relationships.

This was my first couples trip with AHA, and I honestly went into it a little skeptical. I didn’t know anyone in the group and wasn’t sure what to expect. Looking back now, it was an incredible experience and a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and build meaningful relationships.

One of the things AHA does exceptionally well is bringing veterans and their spouses together with others who share similar backgrounds and life experiences. Veterans have a unique bond, even when they served in different branches, held different jobs, or served during different periods. There is an understanding that exists without needing much explanation.

It was equally rewarding to watch the spouses connect. Some were with their veterans throughout their military service, while others came into the relationship after their spouse had already transitioned out. Regardless of when they entered the journey, they all shared common experiences and challenges. Being the spouse of a veteran comes with unique circumstances that can be difficult to navigate. Having the opportunity to learn from one another, encourage each other, and speak into each other’s lives and relationships is invaluable. Veterans can be a lot to deal with at times, and having a community that understands those realities is a tremendous blessing.

AHA put together an amazing group representing different branches of service and military occupations. Listening to everyone’s stories, learning about their experiences, and sharing our own was healing in ways I didn’t expect. We laughed together, talked a little trash, supported one another, and built connections that felt genuine. For many veterans, what we miss most after leaving the military is the brotherhood—the feeling that someone always has your back. This trip helped recreate a piece of that.

As divers, we understand the importance of having a dive buddy. Underwater, you maintain situational awareness and look out for one another. In many ways, this trip reflected that same principle above the water. We came together as strangers but quickly became a team that supported, encouraged, and watched out for each other.

This experience was especially important for my spouse and me because it gave us much-needed time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Like many veterans and military families, we miss the sense of community that military life often provides. This trip gave us space to slow down, reflect, reconnect, and simply enjoy being present with each other—something that can be difficult to do in the demands of daily life.

For anyone who enjoys diving, these trips are hard to beat. The opportunities to dive are endless, and the dive sites are absolutely beautiful. Whether you’re an experienced diver or simply love being underwater, the experience is unforgettable.

One of the unique aspects of this trip was having a donor join our group. Hearing their story and seeing firsthand the genuine compassion and desire they have to help veterans and their families was inspiring. It provided a perspective that many of us do not often get to see. To any potential donor, I would encourage you to join a trip if given the opportunity. Seeing the impact firsthand is powerful, and you quickly realize how much these experiences mean to the people whose lives are touched by them.

What stood out most to me is that you truly arrive as strangers and leave as friends. The relationships formed during these trips extend far beyond the trip itself. They strengthen our community, expand our support networks, and remind us that none of us have to navigate life alone.

Thank you to AHA, the donors, the volunteers, and everyone who made this trip possible. The memories, friendships, and experiences gained will stay with us for years to come.

Thank you Troy and the AHA team for all you did for this trip and what you continue to do for our community.

My recent tahr hunt in New Zealand through American Heroes Adventures was much more than a hunting trip—it was a life-changing experience that reminded me of the importance of camaraderie, purpose, and healing.

Like many veterans, transitioning back to civilian life can present challenges that are difficult for others to fully understand. Opportunities to reconnect with fellow veterans in meaningful environments are invaluable. This trip provided exactly that. Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, I was able to step away from the stresses of everyday life and focus on what truly matters: friendship, shared experiences, and personal growth.

The hunt itself was an incredible adventure. Pursuing tahr in the rugged mountains of New Zealand pushed me physically and mentally, rekindling the sense of challenge and accomplishment that many veterans miss after leaving military service. Every day brought new obstacles, unforgettable scenery, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

What made the experience truly special, however, was the people. Spending time with other veterans who understand similar struggles created bonds that cannot be easily replicated elsewhere. We shared stories, encouraged one another, and built friendships that will continue long after the trip ended. There was a sense of belonging and support that reminded me I am part of a community that continues to look out for one another.

This experience provided me with renewed confidence, perspective, and gratitude. It reminded me that healing and growth often happen outside our comfort zones and that shared adventures can have a profound impact on mental and emotional well-being.

Programs like American Heroes Adventures are only possible because of generous donors and supporters who believe in giving back to those who have served. Financial contributions do far more than fund a trip—they create opportunities for veterans to reconnect, recover, and rediscover purpose. They provide experiences that improve lives, strengthen communities, and remind veterans that their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who supports American Heroes Adventures. Because of your generosity, veterans like me are given opportunities that make a lasting difference. I encourage anyone considering supporting this organization to do so. Your contribution is not simply funding an adventure; you are investing in the well-being, resilience, and future of the veterans who have served our country.

Thank you for making experiences like this possible as I would have never had this opportunity!

As a military spouse, my experience on the recent Philippines Dive Adventure trip with American Hero Adventures was incredibly impactful; truly a once in a lifetime experience. My husband and I have created memories that we will carry with us long after the trip ended. From the moment the adventure began, we felt welcomed into a community of people who understand one another without needing many words. The experience allowed me to step away from the stresses and challenges of everyday life and simply be present. Military spouses often serve in ways that aren’t always visible. We navigate deployments, frequent moves, career sacrifices, and the emotional challenges that come with supporting a loved one who serves. What makes American Hero Adventures so special is that they recognize and honor not only the veteran or service member, but also the family members who stand beside them every step of the way. Being acknowledged as a military spouse was both humbling and empowering. It was a reminder that our sacrifices matter, our stories matter, and our contributions are seen.

What made this experience with American Hero Adventure so important was the opportunity to reconnect— not only with others but with myself. The adventure reminded my husband and I that we are not alone and that there is strength in community. It provided camaraderie that many veterans miss after leaving military service. I left the trip feeling renewed, recharged, appreciated and so thankful to have had this amazing experience with this amazing group of people the last 14 days. The friendships formed and the conversations shared were invaluable.

I would encourage any veteran or service member and military spouse to participate given the opportunity. Whether you’re looking for fellowship, healing, personal growth, or simply a chance to recharge, these experiences create lifelong memories, connection and a sense of belonging. American Hero Adventures made the entire process stress free from start to finish. We just packed our bags and checked in. Every detail of the trip was well organized, and the itinerary thoroughly planned out.

I would also encourage donors or supporters to invest in this organization. Your support does far more than fund a trip— it creates opportunities for healing, connection, and hope. It helps heroes build relationships, strengthen their mental and emotional well-being, and build a supportive community for those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country. Your generosity makes experiences like this possible for military families and veterans who may otherwise never have the opportunity. The impact goes far beyond the trip itself.

American Hero Adventures creates opportunities for military spouses to feel valued, supported, and connected to a community that understands the unique journey we share. That recognition is powerful, and it reinforces the message that no hero serves alone. By investing in veterans and their families together, AHA strengthens the entire military community and helps ensure that those who quietly serve behind the scenes are never forgotten.

My wife and I are incredibly grateful for the opportunity American Hero Adventures gave us to reconnect and create lasting memories together through meaningful shared experiences.

Throughout military service, spouses make countless sacrifices that often go unrecognized. For me, this experience was a chance to give back to my wife and thank her for the years of unwavering support and sacrifice she has made standing by my side. Sharing a bucket list adventure like diving with whale sharks together made that experience even more special and unforgettable.

What stood out most was how thoughtfully everything was planned. Every detail allowed us to simply be present, free from responsibility, and fully dedicate our time to each other. It gave us the opportunity to strengthen our relationship, rekindle parts of our connection that life sometimes pushes aside, and build excitement around future goals and shared hobbies together.

Equally impactful was the camaraderie built with other veteran couples. The bonds formed naturally through shared adventure and genuine connection, creating a sense of community without pressure of organized sessions to share or revisit difficult experiences.

American Hero Adventures provided us with far more than an incredible trip — it gave us the opportunity to strengthen the foundation of our marriage, connect with an amazing collection of people, and create memories we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. We are deeply thankful for that gift and opportunity.

My experience with AHA was something you experience once in a lifetime. I am beyond grateful to experience the country of New Zealand in such a unique way. Getting to share the passion of hunting with other veterans in such an amazing place is something I’ll never forget. It was super important for me to have a mental reset and share this with other veterans. Everyone I met who was involved was professional and very knowledgeable, they made the trip work seamlessly. On top of memories I’ll carry forever, it is a place where you can make lifelong connections with amazing people. I would encourage anyone who got the opportunity to go on a Hero Adventure to take it, you won’t regret it.

I was lucky to share this experience with my brother. After I got out of the military, he went into the Marines himself. We rarely got to see each other for almost ten years. This was the first big thing we got to do since we both got out of the Marines. I know you can’t buy back time, but this trip made up for the decade lost between us.
